When today’s boomers, not to mention today’s pre-boomers (the new-chic word for geezer) were young, stress had not been invented. Oh, moms got frazzled with everything, dads (and occasionally moms too) came home bushed after a long hard day at the office, office buddies groused about too much work for too little pay – but nobody had figured out that Stress was messing with our lives.

Now we know.

Over on the PositScience site – this is a company that follows such things – Karen Merzenich reports on a Wired magazine article by Jonah Lehrer; it’s not online yet, but parts have been on Lehrer’s own blog. Lehrer has found, in talking with primatologist Robert Sapolsky, that stress is bad for one’s health even if one happens to be a baboon

Throughout decades of research studying baboon populations in Africa, Saposkly noticed that low social position created stress and poorer health in some of the baboons. Studies in humans have shown much the same thing. Specifically, things like having a mean boss or not having any control over your work contribute to a sustained stress response in your brain which negatively affects health and longevity. To paraphrase, Lehrer essentially says that stress doesn’t make you sick- but if you are sick, it will make it worse.

This news comes not long after an article in Psychology Today, by Howard Fillit M.D., about stress and its long-terms effects:

Over the course of a lifetime, the effects of chronic stress can accumulate and become a risk factor for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Several studies have shown that stress, and particularly one’s individual way of reacting to stress (the propensity to become “dis-stressed” often found in neurotic people for example), increases the risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

For boomers, pre-boomers, elders and geezers, if stress has been accumulating all these years, it’s probably a good time to change. Perhaps, just chill out. Chilling out is something else that wasn’t invented until after stress was… but it is a handy response for these days.

Phil's Notes
I must admit that I do have an advantage living on the bay, and
that it witnessing God's nature ( many animals) at His best. And
today was no exception. I journeyed to parking lot near our
dumpster to take out some trash and low an behold I suddenly spotted
several deer in the bushes behind the dumpster and I then quickly
went to my trunk and got out my camera and began to shoot some still
Photos ( see above) and some video footage of the deer. ( see above)
God shows himself in the beautiful animals like the deer, and other
animals which he simply spoke in existence at the creation. Isn't
God simply awesome.

Phil's Notes:
Today's feature event was the men's ministry steak out at Greece AG Church.
The dinner included corn on cob, rolls, baked beans and steak
or chicken, plus ice cream for dessert. It was Delicious and wish
you were there to enjoy it. We also had a fine time of fellowship with
the brethren of the church. Steve Perticone led in a time of worship.
The main feature of the event was a testimony by Sam Raiti, who along
with wife Lucille are new adherents to our church. Sam, said he was
a native New Yorker hailing from North Syracuse, NY. But in his testimony he
centered on the period of his life in the state of Massachusetts.
He told of residing in a town in Massachusetts, and searching for a
good church and he found a small AG Church in the town, but he felt
it was not handicap accessible for his handicapped daughter, so they
looked around town, at other churches but the Lord kept drawing him
back to this particular church, and finally made contact with church
and they said there was side entrance which his daughter could enter in
and that began his association with this AG church. From the start
it was a struggle, as the minister soon resigned and they were without
pastor for a period of time, but Sam felt that this was a church for them.
After a period of struggle, God finally sent a preacher willing to
accept the church pastorate for no salary. And God began to bless and
show the increase and they had to build a new building and today
they have a church that seats 500 ( with expansion for 700) along
with Christian Day School ( K-12).

Notes : Tonight we went to see Riverdance troup perform here in our town
and Jo Ann and Phil would give them a ten on a one to ten scale
I just hope they ate lunch before performing ( otherwise I am
sure they would have lost their lunch / with all the exuberant
dancing) The crowd loved it and gave them much applause and the
audtiorium appeared about 3/4 full ( full seating around 2,000 People)
This is their farewell tour and it was worth the trip to see them.

Three nuns were driving across the desert and suddenly ran out of gas.

Remembering a gas station not too far back, one of them decided to walk back for enough gas to get them back for a fill-up.

The gas station owner said, "I'm so sorry, Sister, but the only container I have is this old bedpan. However, you are certainly welcome to use it!"

Agreeing, the nun filled the bedpan and walked back to the others waiting by the car. She removed the gas cap and started to fill the tank with the bedpan.

Just then, another driver came by, stopped and said, "Ladies, I am not Catholic, but I certainly do admire your faith."

Today's Message:

"I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.
So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who
waters, but God who gives the increase" 1 Cor 3:6-7

I was a farmer today. I may have been turning fallow ground,
preparing it for planting. I may have planted seed, ready to
sprout when someone else comes by to water. I may have
watered seeds already sown. I may have pulled weeds that
were wanting to choke out the new plants. I may have poured
water on a parched, drought stricken field, bringing new life to
nearly dead plants. I just might have harvested the results of
others' efforts.

I was a farmer today. I may not know the results of today's
labor on this side of heaven, but, I can sleep tonight knowing
that a couple who claim to have once been Christians have
heard again the Good News that Jesus wants to redeem them.
I will be able to stand before the Father with a clean conscience,
knowing that if they fail to enter the kingdom, the fault will
not be mine.

I was a farmer today. I will not worry about the crop -- it's
in God's hands.

With dirt under my fingernails, Hallelujah, Amen and Amen.

Phil's Notes: Tonight was the official start of our Greece Assembly of God
Intramural Volleyball Season and our team, The Eagles had
a great start/ under the direction of our manager Beth Richardson.
We played three games and won two. Phil also is progressing as a
player, after attending two practice and training sessions as the
church. Phil finds the whole thing very uplifting for his mind
and spirit and most of all has a good time with his extended
family of brothers and sisters in the Lord. Phil made a video

DALLAS (Reuters) - Feeling under the weather? If you're American there is a one in three chance that you have encountered a divine healing and so you may put your faith in a spiritual rather than medical cure.

That is one of the findings of the second part of the "U.S. Religious Landscape Survey" released on Monday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. The first part of the survey, based on a 2007 nationwide survey of over 35,000 U.S. adults, was released earlier this year.

"A third of all Americans (34 percent) say they have experienced or witnessed a divine healing of an illness or injury," the survey said.

America's high rates of religious belief and regular worship attendance set it apart from most other affluent nations and ripple throughout the country's culture.

The survey found, for example, that 71 percent of Americans are "absolutely certain" of God's existence and 39 percent attend a religious service at least once a week.

It also showed that nearly a third of American adults reported that they received "definite answers" to specific requests made by prayer at least once a month.

On the case, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were forced to camp under the stars. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.

"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see," said Holmes.

"Mllions and millions of stars." the good doctor replied.

"What does that tell you?"

Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter-past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Holmes?"

Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. "Elementary, my dear Watson. Someone has stolen our tent."

Phil's Notes: Day Two in Life and Times with Phil's 87 year old mother.
Today Phil and his mother journey to the Buffalo Zoo and it a was
quite adventure. First it was paid lot and when got it there was
no parking / so Phil did the next best thing and parked in not spot.
One observation we noted was the zoo core audience with 2 and 3 year
old children/ in double strolled. LOL. Very few older adults/ except
for the mother of the 2 and 3 year olds. The last time I visited this
zoo I 10-15 years old. My only memory of the zoo was that I bought
some cotton candy and got awful sick and never ate cotton candy again.
The zoo had definitely changed in 40 years. They had very nice displays
for the animals / with glass directly in front of animals so that you
could see the animals up close. They also had under water viewing areas for
sea lions. Phil stopped at food both and got a cheeseburger and coke
but no cotton candy. The weather was perfect but I did seem to suffer
from heat when I left the zoo. One of the most interesting part of trip
to zoo was the people watching of all these two and three years olds.
LOL. My mother kept up with me / but we stopped ever so often to rest
on the benches. All in all mother and I had a great day at the zoo.

Life with my Father:
My greatest hero was my Dad. He was also my
greatest fan and supporter. I am remember when I won a trip to the New York Worlds Fair, 1964, my dad volunteered to go along with the group as a chaperone and he and I had a ball. We explored NY City and even took a commuter train ride out to Glen Cove. LI. to see some of my dad's relatives and I got to explore the Russian emissary summer home across the street from my relatives homes ( and were
subsequently booted out when we climbed over the fence to check it
out further). My dad was strict but loving. Many summers we took
camping trips to Southern Tier and stayed at Allegheny State Park. Our relatives stayed in a cabin, but we ended up in the overflow section for campers. But we had loads of fun and enjoyed fun at campfires with my cousins. In 1959, my dad bought a brand spanking new Ford Car and he decided to take the longest road trip in our lives thus far. We drove from Tonawanda, Ny to Ft Lauderdale, Florida, with rolling adventures every step of the way. We first traveled to Washington DC
and stayed in old make shift cabins right in middle of Washington DC and got to see all the sites including the White House. We then travled South and when we
reached Georgia, we ran into blinding rainstorm, which forced my dad to stop
the car on the side of the road ( near a truck stop restaurant). My dad was
not big on hotels, so we all just laid back and rested as comfortably as we
could in our car. We then traveled to Florida ( pre Disney and theme parks)
and the first thing I remembered seeing were road sides advertising fresh
orange Juice and other road sign advertising live alligators ( but we never
saw any because it cost money to see them). In Florida they had little shoulders if any and they consisted of sand. As we traveling along the road, my dad went off the road on to the shoulder and got stuck in the sand and try as he may he could not get out, until a passerby stopped and told him how to successfully get out of sand. We finally made it to Ft Lauderdale and back to New York, but it was a trip of a lifetime. My Dad supported all three of us Edins as far as going to college / both morally and financially. One funny adventure occurred on my wedding day in April of 1973. My dad had to work the early shift at this factory that day, but was determined not to miss my wedding day. My dad is a cautious driver, but on that day he was running late as he traveled from his work down the Thruway/ to Rochester / and then to PARMA, NY for my wedding. As he was running late, he began to speed up and got stopped by the NY State Troopers for speeding. He told the the trooper the story of how he was just getting off work and running late on the way to his son's wedding in Rochester and the trooper said " Have some cake for him" and let him go without a ticket. We lived about 85 miles away from my mother and dad, so had limited access to seeing them in person, but I relished the home visits to 246 Deleware St and my mother and dad. After arriving and the formalities of greetings, I settled down on one couch and dad settled in his chair and we both closed our eyes and began to talk. We talked about anything and everything that was on our minds. In between visits, Dad sent me a weekly letter ( hand written) telling me all the latest news from Tonawanda. In between in person visits we all talked once a week by telephone and again he shared with me all the local news of Bethesda church and Tonawanda. My dad was also a spiritual leader in his home and at his church. When I came home for our visits he most always got out the Bible to read the devotional at breakfast time. In church, during his later years, he served as Assistant Pastor and was charge of hospital visitations at the local hospital. Everbody at the church knew and loved Pastor Curtis. My dad was kind of person that seemed to know everyone in town. If he did not know you when his first met you, he would with several minutes of meeting you. My dad also loved our son Pastor Tim. I believe my Dad was part of the inspiration for Tim going into the ministry. I Just wished he could have lived to see Tim today as he preaches the word of God and serves as a pastor in West Virginia. ( but my guess he is looking down from heaven and smiling down at Pastor Tim). My Dad passed away several years back, and it was very hard on me at first. But as I walked along the beach at Charlotte Beach, one morning, God showed me that Dad was in heaven, looking down at me and I smiled. Happy Fathers Day Dad.

Keep it Simple for Father's Day

Thoughtful and Cheap Gifts for the Dads we Love

My husband nudged me on the shoulder today and reminded me, "It's Father's Day this Sunday." Really? How did that sneak up on me so quickly? Well, probably because my life is moving too fast and this is my first Father's Day without having my dad with me. So blocking is in order, right? No one wants to even think of that first Father's Day without his or her dad, but here it is and I have to face the truth. This is what I came up with. My dad was not one who was big on gifts. Well, that's not true. He was big on gifts, but not big on extravagant gifts. He was a sucker for the little things. So, this year, I thought I would share some simple ways to love the dads in your life, whether they are your dads or your husbands or brothers, whatever, just the men in your life that you love who happen to be dads.

· Write him a letter telling him everything you love about him.

· Make him a memory book of your happiest "dad" childhood memories. Or better yet, collaborate. Have other people join in and write or illustrate their thoughts and memories on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet. Put it in one book and you have a wonderful and simple gift.

· Bring him a stack of his favorite magazines.

· Make his favorite snack or desert. My dad loved black licorice. So, every Father's Day I would bring him a big bag of it.

· Do what he loves. If he loves gardening or cleaning cars or history, do something with him that reflects that love.

· Listen to him. Listen to what the dad's in your life have to say. Just listen to their stories or advice. It is a tremendous gift to give someone we love our full attention.

· Have your kids make a play about "dad" or "grandpa." The kids will love the activity and the fathers will feel appreciated and loved.

· Treat him like a king. Give him the "royal treatment" and give him his way all day!

· Every hour on Father's Day, give him a compliment.

· Make a "10 Things I love about You" poster.

· Give a coupon book of treats to be used every month. For instance, give your dad a lunch out, just you and him, once a month...all year long.

· Just as good, call your dad once a month just to remind him of one thing you love about him.

All of these gifts are cheap or free. They come from our hearts and chances are the dads in our lives will fall for them, hook, line and sinker.

Try one or two and see what happens when you practice simplicity on Father's Day.

What's With All the Prayer Breakfasts?
Why can't they do a prayer lunch instead?

President Barack Obama will attend the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast on Friday. The event is one of many religio-political breakfasts held around the country—like the Greater Chicago Leadership Prayer Breakfast in December, the Minnesota Prayer Breakfast in April, and, most famously, the National Prayer Breakfast in February, attended b y every president since Eisenhower. Why so many prayer "breakfasts"—rather than prayer lunches or teatimes?
Tradition. The prayer breakfast got started in mid-1930s Seattle, where traveling preacher Abraham Vereide held morning meetings for politicians and businessmen to pray about—and try to combat—poverty and the spread of communism. He decided on breakfast due to the Christian tradition of morning prayers and, it's said, as a nod to John 21—wherein Jesus appears to his disciples in the early morning by the Sea of Tiberias and helps them catch fish. Breakfast was also practical, since 7 or 7:30 a.m. meetings didn't interfere with the workday or with family obligations in the evening.
Vereide's informal prayer breakfast concept spread quickly, first through Seattle, then to San Francisco and Chicago and to Washington, D.C., in the early 1940s—where the preacher's disciples created weekly breakfast groups for senators and congressmen. The purpose of these meetings was to encourage personal relationships among religious politicians and to discuss the problem of poverty. Again, breakfast made sense for those with full schedules of legislative work and meetings. In 1953, members of these informal groups and Vereide initiated the first annual Presidential Prayer Breakfast, attended by Eisenhower, which was later retitled the National Prayer Breakfast. Although local politicos made up most of the guest list at the earliest of these breakfasts, nowadays they're also attended by business, social leaders, and foreign dignitaries.
The many present-day prayer breakfasts are modeled on the national one and thus play on the title, although the National Prayer Breakfast, the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast, and other large breakfasts are really conferences that can last two or three days—not just quick a.m. snacks. The main events at these conferences do tend to be morning meals, during which speakers address the crowd. At the National Prayer Breakfast, for example, guests sip orange juice and coffee and such while the president, and a keynote speaker, deliver addresses. Christians, Jews, and Muslims share the general tradition of morning prayer. Religious Jews recite the Schacharit prayer in the morning; in the Muslim custom, the first of five daily prayers is called the Fajr and is habitually recited by sunrise; Roman Catholics and Anglicans are supposed to say the Lauds or Matins near dawn.

A father decided it was time to have "the talk" with his ten-year-old son. Sitting the boy down, he thought it best to first find out what his son might already know. So he asked his son if he knew about "the birds and the bees".
"I don't want to know," his son replied, bursting into tears. "Promise you won't tell me. Please!"
Confused by this reaction, the father asked his son what was wrong.
"Oh dad", the boy replied, in between sobs, "when I was six, I got the 'there’s no Santa' speech. At seven I got the 'there’s no Easter bunny' speech. Having A Higher Purpose In Life Reduces Risk Of Death Among Older Adults
ScienceDaily (June 15, 2009) — Possessing a greater purpose in life is associated with lower mortality rates among older adults according to a new study by researchers at Rush University Medical Center.

Patricia A. Boyle, PhD, and her colleagues from the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, studied 1,238 community-dwelling elderly participants from two ongoing research studies, the Rush Memory and Aging Project and the Minority Aging Research Study. None had dementia. Data from baseline evaluations of purpose in life and up to five years of follow-up were used to test the hypothesis that greater purpose in life is associated with a reduced risk of mortality among community-dwelling older persons.

Purpose in life reflects the tendency to derive meaning from life’s experiences and be focused and intentional, according to Boyle.

After adjusting for age, sex, education and race, a higher purpose of life was associated with a substantially reduced risk of mortality. Thus, a person with high purpose in life was about half as likely to die over the follow-up period compared to a person with low purpose. The association of purpose in life with mortality did not differ among men and women or whites and blacks, and the finding persisted even after controlling for depressive symptoms, disability, neuroticism, the number of medical conditions and income. During the study period, 151 participants died.

“We are excited about these findings because they suggest that positive factors such as having a sense of purpose in life are important contributors to health,” said Boyle.

The study is published in Psychosomatic Medicine.

THE MARKET

We are having such incredible opportunities to tell
people about Jesus. Today we did an open air show
in a large market. Across from the puppet stage, they had
dead chickens ready to buy for dinner. An appropriate
number of flies were also present. The booths were small
and close together and everywhere there were
children. You could buy just about anything you
wanted, including clothing. More than one hundred
and fifty people gathered to listen to stories
about Jesus and watch the puppets sing songs about Him.
Many responded to the Gospel and prayed to receive Christ.
Men, women, children and teenagers were present. Most of
these people had never been to a church and would
never plan on attending one. After we finished our
friends handed out Christian literature with contact
information so they could find a good church to attend.
Please pray for the people who heard the Gospel today
to remember what they heard and trust in Jesus
Christ.

THE APPLE

We never know when we plan to do a program what exactly
God will do. Always I am amazed as I watch children respond
to the good news about Jesus. So many children prayed
today, calling on Jesus to save them, just like he
saved Peter. They were amazed at Jesus walking on water,
but I was more amazed at the way they listened. We were
at a Christian school, but almost all of the children
were from non-Christian homes. The director was
so excited to see the way the children prayed.
She desperately wants these children to know
Jesus as their Savior. Please pray for the
children to grow strong in their new faith.
For me, one of the sweetest things that
happened today was when a little girl
gave me her apple. It was part of
her lunch, but she wanted me to have it.
Elisabeth had asked Jesus to
be her Savior and wanted to thank me. Please
remember to pray for her.

Switch from analog to digital TV Cagle Post

Phil's Notes:
Well as of yesterday, we have no TV signal in our house. We
sent for converter coupon but lost it somewhere in our unit.
But today, I checked out both
TV's and found no signal ( except for WXXI educational TV which
has not yet switched). But as I lay resting on the couch, my mind
( which seems to be ever at work) began to imagine a new type of TV.
In my mind, I saw a overnight news report from Moscow, Russia, where they
reported on a mass evangelistic rally of 12,000 in a local soccer
stadium in downtown Moscow, with reports of 2,000 converts to Jesus Christ.
I next saw a report of miracle service in Bombay India with over 50,000
in attendance. The reporter on the scene said there were reports of blind eyes
being instantly opened and crippled being healed from their
wheel chairs ( and walking out on their own after being healed).
That was followed by a report from Sao Paulo, Brazil,
where a reporter told of a puppet ministry
from the USA being allowed in six of the local
elementary schools for assemblies, in which the gospel
message was openly shared with the school children and
many children raised there hands after the puppet
presentation to turn their lives to Christ.
The school administrators had invited the puppet ministry
to the schools. The next report I heard was from a
small apartment in an upscale section of Shanghai China,
where a small group of intellectuals
gathered for a morning prayer and Bible study.
The last report was from a maximum security prison in Istanbul,
Turkey, where mass murderer Avixis Helvisrjk, responded to
chapel service in the prison last night and repented
of his horrible sins and committed his life to the
Lord Jesus Christ.

A style-struck pair, Ms. Bello, a writer, and Mr. DePaolis, who has worked for Banana Republic, might have been haunting some Manhattan citadel of chic — Jeffrey in the meatpacking district or Barneys on Madison Avenue. In fact they were in Chelsea, spelunking for treasures at the Goodwill store on West 25th Street.

The 5,500-square-foot thrift outlet is a laboratory of sorts for Goodwill and its 2,200 stores around the country. Intent on sprucing up an image that conjures low-end castoffs and no-frills ambience, many Goodwill stores are courting the shoppers who scour high-end resale shops and department store sales racks for bargains.

“We are making a particularly strong push right now to improve our image, our reputation and our brand, to promote Goodwill as a cool place to shop,” said Jim Gibbons, the chief executive for Goodwill Industries International in Rockville, Md.

Many Goodwill stores have increased the size of their sales floors to display goods more generously, Mr. Gibbons said, rather than turning them out jumble-sale-style. Shoppers expecting a traditional thrift store might be surprised to enter one of Goodwill’s free-standing “boutiques” in cities including Milwaukee; Palm Beach, Fla.; and Portland, Ore., which offer daily deliveries of donated designer goods and department store labels in the manner of a fast-fashion chain like H & M.

Phil's notes: I have shopped at local Goodwill store in Tonawanda many
times while I was growing up and now they have a Goodwill store right
next to Bayview Y where I go to exercise and have shopped there.

A New Yorker was forced to take a day off from work to
appear for a minor traffic summons.

He grew increasingly restless as he waited hour after endless hour for his case to be heard.

When his name was called late in the afternoon, he stood before the judge, only to hear that court would be adjourned for the rest of the afternoon and he would have to return the next day.

"WHAT FOR?!?!?" he snapped at the judge.

The Judge, equally irked by a tedious day and sharp query, roared out loud: "Twenty dollars contempt of court! That's why!"

Then, noticing the man checking his wallet, the judge relented:
"That's all right. You don't have to pay now."

Notes:
Last night I had a interesting dream. I dreamt I was at a very large church,
but I got there after the church was started and thus was kept out of entering
the sanctuary. In fact when I got to church entrance the front door was closed, even though the church service was just beginning. After a few minutes the doors were opened, so I went into to the church lobby, and waited there, for the proper time to enter the sanctuary. At that moment I ventured into the large sanctuary, looking for a seat and found several open seats, so I decided on one open seat and sat down to enjoy the service. After a short time I was approached by a church usher for informed me that my seat was reserved, along with a number of seats, which he said were marked with white cards on the seats. I felt let down and immediately got up and left the pew and the church. After thinking about this dream, I thought how
pew friendly is our chuch/

Things may not be what they seem, however. Europe simply may be further along the road of modernist "disenchantment" with religion than either the United States or Canada. From the 1930s to the 1950s, European church-going imperceptibly became a matter of social respectability rather than a desire to worship God. From the 1960s, when everyone suddenly realized that his neighbor would prefer to sleep in on Sunday as well, church attendance progressively collapsed. Over time society became increasingly secular in law, custom, social atmosphere--and eventually in religion, too.

This is producing a religious paradox worthy of G.K. Chesterton. Paul M. Zulehner, dean of the theology department at Vienna Catholic University, sees what is happening in Europe not as irreligion but as a frustrated religious impulse: "We are observing a boom in religious yearning and at the same time a shrinking process of the churches." Why so? Because, Zulehner says, "The churches have secularized themselves."

How true is this? The shrinking of the secularized churches is obvious enough. In Western Europe it often is hard to distinguish the local church from a social-service agency; bishops reserve their prophetic fire to denounce cuts in public spending rather than private sins.

Phil's Notes:
I have another miracle testimony to report today. Last Saturday we went
to Strong Hospital ( part of UR Medical Center) for a free screen
screening to detect skin cancer. There were alot of people there and
we had to wait our turn for free screening. Both Jo Ann and Phil had
screening and came away with good report/ Cancer free/ PTL. We then
walked to our car in parking garage and left hospital. We went to Famous
Dave's for lunch and to store and then home. Phil then realized he
was missing his I pod which was quite expemsive to buy. He thought
and thought and thought that he might have misplaced it in his car
upon leaving the hospital earlier, so he looked and then said to
himself he would check trunk and car further later when he had
time. He prayed about it and Lord showed him he would get it back.
He later more thoroughly checked car to no avail and prayed
again about it, but left it in God's hand and went about his
life. The following Tuesday morning he received a car from UR
Security and said they had Phil's I pod and I could come there
to pick it up, which I later did. It is miracle considering
it high street value/ that it ever turned up and was returned
to Lost and Found at UR, but My God is a miracle working God
and he performed the impossible for me/ the return of my
expensive IPOD and that is my miracle for today.

Funny Note: Yesterday we went to fancy home in Greece for
luncheon for one of Jo Ann's friends from her Bible studies
she had earlier attended in Greece, NY. We had very lunch
Jo Ann caught up on lives of earlier friends. After
lunch they had a beautiful cake to commemorate her friends
Judys 40 years of conducting Bible studies. A cake is
something that we did not want to miss so both Phil and
Jo Ann had a nice piece of the beautiful cake. Both Phil
and Jo Ann noticed it little differenct but Phil quickly
engulfed the cake. The hostess then came back into the room
and asked us how we like the RUM cake. We were flabbegasted
( as we are both teetotalers). Jo Ann later remarked to Phil
maybe she should drive home ( as she had later thrown away her
piece when she found it had rum in it). It was a catholic host

and so I guess we will have to go to confession now Ha Ha.

Jesus mentions meeting the woman at the well / seeking water and
Jesus responds that he could give her Living water.

I have been reading much about happiness and how people can be
happy. Many book purport to giving you the secret for happiness.
Even religion offers path to happiness by saying so many Hail Marys
or giving all your money to their organization.

But back to the well. Jesus still offers us water from a very
deep well. He offers us living water which will never end/ an
endless stream so to speak. It can mean the difference between Heaven
and Hell or live and death. Would you like this water. All you have
to is ask. See John 3: 16 for further instructions.

Notes: Today, Phil ventured down to the lakeshore in Ironequoit for running of
Annual Rochester Soap Box Derby. It features cars built by kids to
race in these races ( which are all over USA). They are maually run cars
and they start at top of hill and then run down hill by the force of
gravity. It was like a circus atmostphere there with many kids. parents
and onlooker joining in the festivities and it was a nice day
weatherwise. Some had also brought their Winnabagos to stay the night
I guess. Phil brought his camera and you can view the show above
or in the second slideshow below by clicking on link below. It
was a fantastic show / and the photos will give you a taste of the show.

Phil's Notes
Phil took a quick trip to Lockport NY to visit his ailing mother and his sister Karen

and her family. He had a pleasant time with them and Phil's mother is recovering

and they determined that she did not have pneumonia after all, just a a cold type

symptoms and she is slowly recovering from that. Last night we went out to

new restaurant called Quaker State Oil and Lube Restaurant and it was theme

type restauant and the theme was cars and gas and oil hence the name it has.

It appeared toa yuppy type crowd and they did serve good food. Phil had the steak

and potato and baked beans. They had a huge car hanging from ceiling ( see above

photo and door knobs were shaped like gas pump control fixture and other items

related to autos. We did not have to wait but my sister said it is big attraction in

area and you usually have to wait for seat to the place. We had a good time and

I would give it A rating.

Phil's Notes:
Just the other day, I was driving home and coming around the corner
the in front of our condo and I was approached by a car in the other land
and I heard a loud noice. A first I thought I had been hit by a rock, but as
I looked down, I saw egg yoke on my rear year mirror, and suddenly realized
I had been " egged" by the passing car. After thinking about this incident
the Lord showed me that just as this incident,were I was egged without warning
as I cruising down the road, sometimes in our spiritual journey, we are
sometimes "egged" . But we must not stop in our spitural journey but pick ourselves
up and continue on our journey for the Lord.

Phil's notes
Yesterday, was the day our cleaning person comes to clean our unit, and as
usual we have to rush around at the last minute doing cleanup / in
prepartion for her later clean up of the unit. We then prepared to
leave and I noted I had misplaced my wallet. I did a rough look around
but did not find it. We then proceeded to Wegmans to get Jo Ann some
lunch and I aske at lost and found if anyone had turned in a lost
wallet and they said NO. I later proceeded to our library and inquired
about a lost wallet to no avail. I also prayed about and I felt the lord
telling me it would be found before the day is out and not to worry,
so that is what I did. We proceeded with our days activities and then
drove home. The first thing I did was go into laundry room and look
through the laundry pile that I had thrown in there when cleaning up
earlier and low and behold I found my wallet in the midst of the dirty
laundry. The Lord had answered my prayers before the day was out / Just
as he said. The Lord answers prayers/ whether big or small. Praise
the Lord.

Pentecostalism has Islam and the Catholic Church on the run in many parts of the world, claim the authors of a new book

It is the 3pm exorcism at the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God on the Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio in São Paulo. The air is sticky and the afternoon has a lazy siesta feel. Middle-class Paulistas drift into the cool, calm church, which, with its comfortable seats, sparkling granite floor and raised stage, has a very American feel, more like the in-house conference centre of a decent-sized multinational than a place of worship. Most of them are women, some with children. There are plenty of shopping bags. The 3pm exorcism seems to be squeezed in between the school run, the laundry and the groceries.

The preacher, Pastor Eginaldo, wearing a white shirt and slacks, asks people to bring forward trinkets belonging to loved ones whose souls are in torment. The congregation sings a hymn — and hands are raised. Pastor Eginaldo talks about the rudimentary problems of life — these demons cannot be driven out by going to the hospital, he says. Then all the people in the church link hands in a huge circle. They close their eyes. Pastor Eginaldo lays his hands on people’s heads, willing the evil spirits out of them. There are ripples of great trauma. A woman in a pink T- shirt collapses, writhing, screaming. Some of the helpers are a bit aggressive: they order people who open their eyes to shut them. But their main job is to catch people who fall over when the pastor cries out, “Leave in the name of Jesus!”

Pentecostalism is growing like crazy in Latin America, where it has shattered the Roman Catholic Church’s monopoly of religion. According to the World Christian Database, there are now 24 million Pentecostal Christians in Brazil, compared with 5.7 million in the United States.

But if you want to see the full power of Pentecostalism there is only one place to go: David Cho’s Yoido Full Gospel Church. For most people the word “megachurch” summons up an image of a Wal-Mart-sized spiritual supermarket in the American suburbs. In fact, five of the world’s ten biggest megachurches are in South Korea. Yoido, the largest of them, sits opposite the national assembly in Seoul, an astute piece of political positioning, akin to Westminster Abbey. It looks somewhat unprepossessing — a brownish blob surrounded by offi ce buildings — but Yoido boasts 830,000 members; one in 20 people in Seoul is a member. Each of the seven Sunday services at Yoido is a logistical challenge: apart from the 12,000 people in the main sanctuary, another 20,000 follow the service on television in overflow chapels scattered around neighbouring buildings. As one service begins and the next ends, around 60,000 comers and goers are ushered by whitejacketed traffic directors. The mother church beams pictures of the service to hundreds of satellite churches around the world and to Prayer Mountain, a gruelling religious camp close to the border with the North.

By the standards of American preachers, Cho is a remarkably restrained figure: with his glasses, tie and tidy red cassock, he looks like one of the more bureaucratic kinds of Asian politician. His tone is logical and unrelenting. Sin and Satan are omnipresent, he argues, but if you ignore their enticements, “your grave is already empty”. As he cites scripture, the passages appear on the big television screens. Cho urges the liberation of North Korea, and cites Ted Haggard as the man who drove out demons in Colorado Springs by exorcising the telephone book. (Sadly, it seems that the devil who drove Haggard to buy sex and drugs from a male prostitute was not listed.) The Yoido Church’s whole culture is deeply American. Most of the praying and converting is done at home, in groups of around a dozen people. The idea is that these cells, like their biological equivalents, will multiply. Yoido sends out six hundred missionaries a year. One target is North Korea, which used to be the more Christian end of the country. (Locals still talk stirringly of the Pyongyang Revival in 1907, which supposedly hooked Kim Jong-il’s grandmother). Plans already exist at Yoido to build a second sanctuary in Pyongyang, as well as 40 other churches.

In their different ways, Pastors Eginaldo and David Cho reflect three things: the global spread of American-style religion in general, and Pentecostalism in particular; the push by evangelical Protestants into politics; and the way that global religion is a two-way street, with American- style Christianity spreading to the developing world and then developingworld Christianity returning to America.

Pentecostalism is the great religious success story of the 20th century. It is not just spreading in Asia and Latin America: in large swaths of Africa Pentecostalism is expanding faster than Islam. It is also expanding twice as fast as Roman Catholicism, and three times as fast as other forms of Protestantism in Africa. The evidence of this can be seen everywhere in the developing world: from churches the size of football stadiums across Latin America to 12,000-acre “redemption camps” in Nigeria. Across the world fiery preachers are delivering the same message: live your life according to God’s law, read the Bible as the literal word of Truth, watch out for miracles and wonders and, above all, prepare yourself for the end of history and the beginning of the millennium.

The success of Pentecostalism is a strange mixture of unflinching belief and pragmatism, raw emotion and self-improvement, improvisation and organisation: like all marketing successes, Pentecostalism owes some of its success to its ability to adapt itself to local traditions, but it is nevertheless a very American product.

Pat Robertson, a Southern Baptist who has always been close to Pentecostals, has been more influential in Africa and Latin America than back home. In 1990 Robertson flooded Guatemala, a favorite evangelical stomping ground, with “Proyecto Luz” (“Project Light”), launched from his Christian Broadcasting Network. He reached 60 per cent of Guatemalan homes with televisions, and galvanized thousands of Pentecostal churches. He also flew to Guatemala City in 1982 to embrace Ríos Montt, a Pentecostal, after his coup, and raised millions to support his regime in “Operation Love Lift”. Korea was converted by American missionaries. Cho started his career as a translator for Samuel Todd, an American Assemblies of God faith healer, who staged a revival tour of South Korea in the 1950s. He founded Yoido in 1956 in a battered tent that he bought from the Marine Corps for $50.

In Guatemala, they have just finished the largest building in Central America. Like Yoido, Mega Frater (Big Brother) is not ashamed of its American roots: it boasts a 12,000-seater church, a vast baptism pool, and a heliport. The road to the church is called “Burger King Drive”.

You can also see this Americanness in the Pentecostals’ determination to reach as many people as possible. While the Catholic Church sticks to Spanish in Mexico and Guatemala, Protestants use indigenous languages. The Pentecostals also use the talents of all the people — especially women. For years, Cho’s right-hand woman was his mother-in-law, Jashil Choi, a figure known as “Hallelujah Mama”. Today Yoido boasts 62,580 female deacons — more than twice the number of male ones.

There is also a very American emphasis on worldly success and upward mobility. In Brazil Bishop Edir Macedo advertises his church as a place where the faithful are rewarded for their sacrifices, usually of a financial kind. “The church of results” will reward them for their 10 percent not just in the next world but in this one. Those little envelopes are “investments”. The bookshops of the megachurches are full of books by management gurus. The churches exude a boundless confidence in the power of self-help and smart management. The business model works: 44 per cent of church donations in Brazil come from Pentecostals, only 31 per cent from the more numerous Catholics.

Harold Caballeros, the pastor of El Shaddai Ministries, a huge outfit in Guatemala, argues that Pentecostalism can lift his country out of poverty by two strategies: teaching individuals to be sober and thrifty (he turned to religion when he was 17 after a period when he drank too much) and teaching officials to abandon corruption. He points to the role that Protestantism played in creating modern institutions in America and to the role that Pentecostalism played in supercharging economic growth in South Korea.

The same force that shaped American religion for centuries is shaping Christianity in both Latin America and Korea — the embrace of the free market and individual choice. In Brazil and Guatemala there are hundreds of smaller religious entrepreneurs. (“We have to work against the competition as well as the devil,” says one young preacher.) And there is also a fight-back by the Catholic Church. Having lost worshippers at a rate of 1 per cent a year since 1991, mainly to Pentecostal churches, Rome is finally responding. That has meant getting rid of a lot of liberation theology; and also imitating the Pentecostals. Brazil’s most famous priest is now Marcelo Rossi, a former physical-education teacher who has been known to perform aerobics during his services.

We had a great weekend. On Sunday we went to Greece AG and had a great
worship led Vic Cavaleri and good attendence in church. Pastor Pat
preached a great sermon on the various churches in Book of Revelations and
how they relate to todays churches. We had great lunch after church
at Perkins. Today ( monday) it was a whirlwind from beginning to end.
Woke up, went to ACM lab for bloodwork, then to McDonalds for breakfast
( as I was starved after fasting for blood test), then to Delta Sonic
in Webster, for gas, car wash and oil change, then to Hair Zoo for
hair cut, then to DeBalle for lunch, then to Y for exercise, then
to Wegmans for groceries, home for a minute, then to Library, then
home to cook supper and then to evening phone calls and that was
MY DAY and how was your day, my I ASK?

Now that frugality is in, fashion lovers are feeling hemmed in by their bank balances, conspicuous-consumption guilt and eco-awareness. (At a time like this, how can you justify owning that many handbags?)

One way to satisfy a frustrated urge to shop is swapping gently used or even new clothing via the Internet. We tried three trading Web sites that offer the electronic version of the old-fashioned swap meet. All three sites -- swapstyle.com, rehashclothes.com and dignswap.com -- let you post pictures of items you no longer want, in hopes of trading them for stuff you do want. The sites are free to use, although the start-up Dig 'N' Swap plans to eventually charge a small transaction fee for each swap completed. And the sites offer accessories, books and other nonwardrobe items as well as clothes.

Anyone with a digital camera and Internet access can begin swapping clothes. Etiquette calls for an item to pass the would-I-give-this-to-a-friend test before it is listed, and that information on size and condition be truthful. Each site has its own swapper ratings system to keep users honest, and once a deal is struck users who are unrated or who have the lower rating are expected to ship first.

Teens panic as they're forced to unplug at camp

Tim Chai keeps in touch with friends through Facebook, listens to music on his iPod and never goes anywhere without his BlackBerry.

So when the 17-year-old was looking for a summer camp, he ruled out a church camp with a no cell phone, no computer policy.

"I just thought it was too much for me to handle," said Tim, of Carmel, Ind. "I love my Internet. I love my phone. I'm not ashamed to say it."

For a generation used to texting, Facebook and YouTube, going away to sleepaway camp can be a bit unnerving. Many outdoor camps don't allow cell phones, laptops or iPods, and there is no computer lab for them to update their pages.

Many campers are "a little panicked" to part with their cell phones, said Tony Sparber, founder of New Image Camps, with locations in Florida and Pennsylvania. Some try to smuggle them in or bring more than one phone in case one is confiscated, he said.

Even parents who are used to having constant access to their kids can experience anxiety.

Kimberley Fink, 40, of Weston, Mass., is a little nervous about her 14-year-old daughter who is going away to camp for the first time. The camp lasts for two weeks and her daughter won't be able to call.

"It makes me slightly uneasy," said Fink. "I will probably be one of the mothers who calls the camp office after a couple of days to check in. Sometimes you just need that reassurance."

Dave Steinberg, owner and director of Canteen Roads Teen Travel Camp out of Huntington, N.Y., said most parents ask about the no-cell-phone policy out of concern for their children's safety.

To reassure them, he gives them his cell phone number and campers a prepaid calling card. He also uploads photos to a password protected site that the parents can access.

Six Conversational Habits to Ditch Today

There’s something to be said for slow and steady progress… And there’s something to be said for strong, decisive, sweeping action. When it comes to bad, self-defeating habits, there’s no time like today to drop ‘em like they’re hot. I’ve been more aware lately of the annoying conversational habits of other people. Worse than that, I’ve then been noticing myself repeating those things. Cutting out these nasty habits make it simpler to get to the heart of communication, so why not start today?

Seeking Attention by Complaining About Your Life

I spoke to someone yesterday who all but refused to talk about the positive aspects of their life. After listening to their troubles, I asked about some of the cool projects they have going on. Within two sentences, they were back to complaining about pretty trivial things. We all need to share our troubles with friends (or strangers) from time to time, but don’t fall into the habit of turning conversations into your own personal dumping ground 100 percent of the time. It’s an easy way to get attention, but it’s a poor way to view your life.

Throwing off Compliments with Self-Effacing Remarks

It’s okay to say “thank you” when you’re complimented. By making a self-effacing comment, you nearly force the other person to repeat their compliment. Not gracious. Saying thank you isn’t snobby, like you’re admitting that you think you’re just grand, it’s simply courteous. Besides, you earned it. Saying “thanks” for a compliment reminds that you’re responsible for a lot of the good things in your life.

Fishing for Compliments

“Oh, I look terrible today.” “I just threw it together at the last minute.” “I’m really not good at things like this!” Please. Stop. Now.

Cutting People off Mid-Sentence

The only time this is okay is when you’re in an intense brainstorming session. Or you’ve got an urgent situation. Or you haven’t seen your best friend in months. Okay, so this habit is kind of elastic, but you get the gist. Most of the time, interrupting just means that you’re missing the best parts of the conversation. Plus, you’re showing your chat partner that you value your own thoughts over theirs. (P.S.: I am totally guilty of this one! This is the habit that will be hardest to break for me.)

Double-tasking While You Chat

If you’re talking to someone, talk to them. Don’t browse blogs, don’t jot your to-do list, and please don’t eat while you’re on the phone. People can tell. And it pisses them off. If you don’t have the time to talk, be honest and find another time or cut it short.

Focusing on Your Inner Monologue Instead of the Dialogue in Front of You

“Holy cow! That’s a great idea. Wow. What can I say that will sound smart and clever? I really hope they think I’m intelligent. I could touch on symbolism or make a reference to post-modernism. Wait–what did they just ask me?” Stay focused on the other person’s words and points. People rarely mind when you say, “Hmm. Let me think about that for a second.” Quite the opposite, since it shows that you’re taking the conversation seriously. If you compose your answers while someone else is speaking, you’re really only having half a conversation.

Notes:
Well the excitement of NY District continued on Thursday night, with the
50 year ministers being recognized and the all prebybeters being honored
and prayed over. A choir and Praise team from Bronx Resurrection Church
played a rousing opening for the service, which had some dancing and jumping
in the aisles. It was an exciting opening for the meetings and got the crowd
prepared for the service. Tonight's service returned to it's normal venue
of our church sanctuary. The crowd was lighter tonight but still enthusiastic
for God's presence and power. Dr. George O Wood General Superintendent/
spoke again tonight and he preached on various models of pentecostal churches
today including 1). retro pentecostal, 2). Properity Gospel pentecostal
3). Nominal Pentecostal 4). Authenic Pentecostal, which he empasized
should be the model that we should be following today. He then gave an
altar call and many ministers and others responded to the call to get
closer to God and his Holy Spirit. It reminded Phil of old time days
of revivals in the pentecost movement/ where they had services every
day of week except Monday. God is still moving by his spirit today
as evidenced by these last three days at this conference. May we all
catch this fresh outporing of His Spirit in these last days.

News Flash: This week the annual ministers meeting of New York District of the Assemblies of God was held at our church Greece AG in Greece, NY.It was a much anticipated and exciting time at our church and upwards of 500 AG ministers adn their families and their delegates from our fellowship in NY gathered their annual convocation and Phil and Jo Ann went along for the ride and Phil documented in the above slide show. On Wednesday night, we had old fashioned old time gospel tent meeting night and the district erected a 500 seat tent for the service. Phil has been in pentecost all his life and it reminded him of childhood days in Tonawanda when the great healing evangelists came to his area and erected their massive tents ( some seated upwards of 3,000 people) . Those days when the tent evangelist came to town / many non church people came just to see what was happening and they never left disappointed. There was style miraculous healing of sick including blind eyes open and deaf ears unstopped.At last night tent meeting, we also had a great time. The Greece Praise team led the Praise and Worship. They also had Buddy Barrel and they told the story how Buddy Barrel was named by Sister Grossglass after Rev.Merlin Grossglass ( our NY District Sectretary / Treasurer) who his mother and nicknamed Buddy. Another 17 year old from Binghamton NY quote whole chapter from the Bible which was amazing. US General Council of AG Supertendent Dr George O Wood gave the message for the evening and he told the story of Lillian Thrasher/ who founded a orpaned in Eqypt many years ago. It is still going today, which is amazing. It was a great evening and proves the winds of the Holy Spirit are still moving today.

Well how was your weekend? We had a great weekend. Saturday we went to Greece
NY and visited our recently opened Mission Share Center/ which is a social
service ministry of our church and a number of other churches in Greece area.
They will distribute food and clothing to those in need. Sunday we attended
our church Greece Assembly of God. We had a good crowd including our former
Pastor Touchstone, who is visiting from Missouri/ for the week. We had
a great praise service and then communion service and great sermon
On " Are the days of Noah Here again" by Pastor pat. A number responded
to his message and came to the altar to prayer. We later went to Denney's
for lunch and home to rest. We pray that you had a great weekend
and pray you have a great week ahead in JESUS.

We are more than cells, synapses and sex drives. We are amazing, mysterious creatures forever in search of something greater than ourselves.
Dale McGowan, the co-author and editor of the book “Parenting Beyond Belief” told me that he believes that most of these people “are not looking for a dogma or a doctrine, but for transcendence from the everyday.”
Churches, mosques and synagogues nurture and celebrate this. Being regularly surrounded by a community that shares your convictions and reinforces them through literature, art and ritual is incredibly powerful, and yes, spiritual.
The nonreligious could learn a few things from religion.

Twenty years of a seven-day-a-week consumer culture has not made Britons measurably happier. Not surprisingly, because the world of salvation-by-shopping depends on advertising making us all too conscious of what we lack. If only we had this watch, that suit, this car, that mobile phone, our pleasure would be complete, at least until tomorrow, when we discover the next thing we do not yet have. The financial meltdown was caused, at least in part, by people spending money they did not have to buy things they did not need to find a happiness that does not last. The consumer culture is, in fact, a remarkably efficient system for the production and distribution of discontent.
We cannot bring back the Sabbath to the public domain, but we can bring it back to our private lives. We need to because neither the environment nor the economy can be predicated on limitless growth, fed by artificial desire.
One day in seven we should give thanks for what we have and open our eyes to the radiance of the world.

......evangelicals are doing rather well for themselves. There seems to be a link between religiosity and upward economic mobility in the US. That is partly because the heartland of evangelical America, the South, has been booming. There is also considerable evidence that, regardless of wealth, Christians are healthier and happier than their secular brethren. David Hall, a doctor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, maintains that weekly church attendance can add two to three years to your life. A 1997 study of 7,000 older people by the Duke University Medical Centre found that religious observance might enhance immune systems and lower blood pressure. In 1992 there were only three medical schools in the United States that had programmes examining the relationship between spirituality and health; by 2006, the number had increased to 141.
One of the most striking results of the Pew Forum's regular survey of happiness is that Americans who attend religious services once or more a week are happier (43 per cent very happy) than those who attend monthly or less (31 per cent) or seldom or never (26 per cent). White evangelical Protestants of the Flanders variety are more likely to report being very happy than white mainline Protestants: 43 per cent compared with 33 per cent. The correlation between happiness and church attendance has been fairly steady since Pew started the survey in the 1970s; it is also more robust than the link between happiness and wealth. Attending church weekly, r ather than not at all, has the same effect on people's reported happiness as moving from the bottom quartile to the top quartile of income distribution - and is a lot easier to do.
Religion can combat bad behaviour as well as promote wellbeing. Twenty years ago, Richard Freeman, a Harvard economist, found that black youths who attend church were more likely to attend school and less likely to commit crimes or use drugs. Since then, a host of further studies, including the bipartisan 1991 National Commission on Children, have concluded that religious participation is associated with lower rates of crime and drug use. JamesQ.Wilson, perhaps America's pre-eminent criminologist, summarises a mountain of evidence from the social sciences succinctly: “Religion, independent of social class, reduces deviance.”

Phil's Notes:
Well last night Phil and Jo Ann became children again/ and went to the
circus and this was the BIGGIE / The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and
Bailey Circus which comes to Rochester ever couple of years.
The auditorium was pretty well full and the air was filled with excitement
as we entered the arena. We noted many kids and very loud noise barker
at the entrance and loud music in foyer. We found our seats and they were
in midst of pre show show/ with many gathered on area floor to watch the
pre show show. That show ended in few minutes and announcer anoounce that
pre show show was ending and for audience to return to the show as the show
was about to begin. We had good seat / two seats / on end/ with no kids
to crawl over us and a good view of show. The circus this year was more
like musical or Broadway show/ with many acts coming out with dancer/
actors accompanying the acts and mostly non stop action from beginning to
finish. They also added three ceiling large screens to project ambient
mood of the act perfroming ie clouds. The hawker were also present
hawking their wares and some I could not even understand what they
were saying. I am glad I had no young child with me / as there would
be strong pressure to for me to buy something / with so many hawkers
coming and going. They had the usual flying acts, dog acts, elephant
acts and wild animals acts and the kids loved it and we loved it also.
We did give in and went to food stand to buy something / because
what is the circus without a hot dog and drink/ Huh?
The wild animal acts were also great / ( see slideshow) and
the animal did their standups for the crowd and they loved it.
The elephants also did their standups and roll downs for the crowd
and the crowd loved it also. But all good things must end and
we had to return to normalcy, but it was a great ride while it lasted
Phil's rating 10. I would highly recommend the show if it comes to
your town.

BANGKOK (Reuters Life!) - A young Thai jewelry designer has crafted a tiara worth $4.2 million for his pet dog, using precious stones given to him by his mother.

Riwin Jirapolsek, who showcased the tiara at a dog show in Bangkok recently, said he wanted to make something special for Kanune, his 15-year-old male Maltese.

He took almost two months to finish the piece, which is made from titanium encrusted with 250-carats of emeralds and diamonds.

On Saturday, Phil and Jo Ann explored world of stock cars at the Western
New York Stock car show held at a local UMC church in nearby Gates, NY.
There were a number of stock cars in assorted shapes and sizes and
many bright colors. Some had the owners name and sponsor painted on the
side of the car. One car was a midget and the owner had get in car by
raising a panel in the roof of the car. There was big crowd there and
they also had refreshments. Phil and Jo Ann had some a hot and hamburger
for their lunch and some of the desserts ( being sold by the church) for
lunch. We also met the female pastor and shared how our son in a UMC
pastor in West Virginia. Phil took a number of photos and today is
sharing two slideshow ( see above of the stock car show). The first
show is by smugmug ( and requires you to quick on hyper link) and
second show is slide ( and only requires you to click on arrow to
begin). We hope you enjoy the show.

Our world seems to be spinning faster and faster and the old phrase, "stop the world I want to get off" rings more true in our ears than ever before. It's a loud, busy and very noisy world. Too many voices. Too much information. Too much input. How do we process it all and live peacefully within it?

Just as the Lord's Prayer tells us to ask for our "daily bread," we must find our daily peace in our quiet time with the Lord each day. Being still and knowing He is God will prepare you for the onslaught of decisions, troubles and trials that come your way within each 24 hours.

We won't find a quiet place amidst our day unless we create one. And for those who are naturally geared to high energy and movement, this is even more of a challenge, but even more necessary. Our body, soul and spirit need rest and stillness. Our bodies were never made for fast lifestyles. Do you ever remember reading anything about Jesus rushing about? He withdrew to quiet places (Luke 5:16) and if He needed this time each day, how much more do we?

Man picking up friend from State Police is arrested, too
Steven Luertzing, 43, of Rochester was charged with driving while intoxicated Thursday as he attempted to collect his friend Yvonne Benedict, 44, of Rochester, who had been charged with DWI, from the State Police barracks in Chili. Troopers said Luertzing smelled of alcohol and determined after a breathalyzer text that he had a blood-alcohol content of .13 percent, nearly twice the legal threshold for DWI.

There's a new bogeyman lurking in the closet, and this one isn't imaginary. Us. One out of three children aged 6 to 11 fears that Ma Earth won't exist when they grow up, while more than half—56 percent—worry that the planet will be a blasted heath (or at least a very unpleasant place to live), according to a new survey.

Commissioned by Habitat Heroes and conducted by Opinion Research, the telephone survey polled a national sample of 500 American preteens—250 males and 250 females.

On a sliding scale of anxieties, minority kids have it worst; 75 percent of black children and 65 percent of Hispanic children believe that the planet will be irrevocably damaged by the time they reach adulthood.

Interestingly enough, kids vex over the state of the planet, especially when it came to safe and clean air and water, regardless of any pro-environmental measures on the part of their parents. A staggering 95 percent of the children surveyed said their parents pitched in by recycling, using rechargeable batteries, and conserving water and electricity.

"We commissioned the survey as a result of my own childrens' experiences with the recent fires in Australia as they expressed much concern for both their safety and the planet’s,” said Sharon Lowe, founder of Habitat Heroes, in a press release. “While it is upsetting to hear how many children in the United States have expressed similar concerns, I am more committed than ever to help educate children around the globe in a way that is not scary to them.”

Other interesting findings

•50 percent say that hurricanes and tornadoes are the natural disasters that scare them the most.

•28 percent say that they fear animals, such as polar bears and penguins, will become extinct and disappear from the planet more than any other environmental concern.

Girls worry more

•67 percent of girls ages 9-11 versus 60 percent of boys ages 9-11 worry that the earth won’t be as good a place to live when they're adults.

•57% of girls ages 6-8 versus 43 percent of boys ages 6-8 worry that the earth won’t be as good a place to live when they're adults.

Urban kids are more anxious than suburban kids

•59 percent of kids in metro areas are more concerned that the Earth won’t be as good a place to live when they grow up compared to non-metro kids (47 percent).

Dr. Phil is a fan of his. So is American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, Hulk Hogan and 20,000 others.
And no one is more surprised than 15-year-old McKay Hatch.
Last year, Hatch told his eighth grade classmates that he wished they wouldn't cuss around him. When a couple of friends confided they felt the same way, McKay printed up some fliers and the No Cussing Club was born.
Less than a year later the club has gone global, with 20,000 members from every state and 35 countries taking an oath to cut down on cussing. His oldest club member is 103. Some members are life-long cuss abstainers (one man says he won't even say "the thing that beavers build"). Others are admitted cursers who loathe their way of life and tell McKay he has given them the strength to reform. Thousands more have sent the teen messages, saying he has inspired them to clean up not just their mouths, but their lives.
A teenage baby sitter confesses that her curses once brought the child in her care to tears, but never again. A grown man says he is going to sober up. And a few weeks ago, an executive in his 50s took it to the next level, showing up on McKay's doorstep to spill his guts about how he has treated his family and how he was going to change.
But while Hatch, now a freshman at South Pasadena High School, has become a young guru for some, he has become a target for others. A small but livid group of people are either convinced he is trying to trample their freedom of speech — or they just really enjoy cursing.
Four-letter words have been hurdled at the freshman like rotten eggs, both in person and on the Internet.
Just the other day, McKay and his dad Brent were playing tennis after school when a bunch of kids passing by screamed obscenities. McKay's dad Brent, who has a weakness for letting the occasional cuss word fly in frustration, nearly let one rip. Chill, McKay told him. It's what he puts up with all the time, particularly on Fridays when club members wear their No Cussing Club T-shirts for unity.
When the city of South Pasadena recently proclaimed the first week of March No Cussing Week, after the club wrote the city council a letter, the mayor's phone lines jammed with people cursing himout.
"It was completely out of control," Brent says, adding that his son got death threats. "People went nuts."
Critics think McKay is trying to ban cursing. Not true, he says. The club is simply a reminder to people to reign in the trash talking which, they say, is becoming more and more pervasive.
It is also a place for people to bond. On McKay's Web site, nocussing.com, people can take the oath to become a member, which gets you a No Cussing Club certificate (Hulk Hogan is the club's most famous honorary member); buy a $2 book of G-rated substitutes for cuss words (son of a biscuit!); and share cuss survival stories, like the one from a woman who was cursed out in front of her children or the one from a woman with a foul-mouthed boss.
McKay is now writing a book about his club – and getting TV exposure. He recently did "Good Morning America," Dr. Phil and a KIIS FM phone interview with host Ryan Seacrest. In September he will begin a speaking tour to 100 elementary schools in the Western states.
This Sunday night McKay will be given a Well Done Award at the Grove of Anaheim. The Well Done Awards show was dreamed up last spring by a pastor at-large Denny Bellesi and his wife Leesa, who live in Lake Forest.
Their inspiration is Matthew 25:23. "Well done, good and faithful servant!" the Scripture reads.
"Why do the Snoop Doggs of the world get honored?" Leesa asked herself. "Why not honor people who have done amazing good things?"
At this year's show, which happens to be on the one-year anniversary of the day McKay started his club, Hatch plans to sing "Don't Cuss," a rap song that he and his uncle and dad wrote. The refrain: "If you wanna hang with us, I don't wanna hear ya cuss." A video of McKay and fellow club members singing it is on nocussing.com. (It can also be seen on YouTube where it has spawned profanity-filled YouTube rants).
McKay also will tell the audience how this all came about; how since he has been a kid, the sound of a curse has felt like a gut punch. "When I first started hearing them, it was like, 'Whoa.' It scared me.'"
His mom, Phelecia, vividly recalls her son coming home from sixth grade upset by what the kids were saying to each other. He asked his mom what he should do. "Be an example," she told him.
McKay says he isn't perfect. "I used to say fudge a lot and then I accidentally said the real word," he confesses. But when he's feeling frustrated, he now reaches for "ouch," "dang it" or even "holy heck." He doesn't think cursing should be outlawed, but just wishes people would try to be more polite.
"That's the whole point of this club," his mom says. "It's about your words and how powerful they really are."
Or, as one man wrote in an e-mail, applauding the teen: "I am simply offended and disheartened by the degree of profanity, vulgarity and obscenity that is accepted in our presumably civilized society."
McKay's parents, who have seven children, were probably no small influence. They wrote the book "Raising a G-Rated Family in an X-rated World," which became a national best-seller in 2006.
After particularly vicious attacks, Brent tells his son to just say the word and he will take down the club Web site. The last time McKay was considering his dad's offer, he received an e-mail message from a kid who moved to a small town in Alaska where he was being bullied by some mean kids on the school bus. The only thing keeping him going was the No Cussing Club, he told McKay.
McKay told his dad to leave the Web site up.
"As a parent, you're always trying to teach your children values and wondering…how much they're taking in," his mom says. She sometimes worries if her son can handle the heat, "but everyone has different missions in this world." And for some, that mission is to "stand up for certain causes and finally say, 'That's enough.'"

Here are 5 tools to get you through line waiting unscathed.

Simply Put Together
1. Get Smart. Start by thinking ahead. Do you really want to go to the post office at noon? Is there another time you can go? One of my dirty little tricks is to go right before closing. Everyone moves very fast. Be smart about when you go places. If you can avoid the worse times to shop or do errands, then do so.

2. Be prepared. Researchers say that one of the most painful aspects of waiting in line is the sense of wasted time. When you bring something with you that you can work on in line, you empower yourself. Here are some examples.
a. Bills that have to be paid.
b. Cards you need to send out.
c. Organize your wallet or handbag.
d. Get all the garbage out of your bag or pockets.
e. Update your phone book in your cell.
f. Answer emails in your blackberry.
g. Work on your To Do list.

3. Distraction. You don't have to be at Epcot to be distracted. Bring a book, an iPod or a magazine. What's wrong with your wait being a time to decompress and have some down time? Visualize how different a wait would feel if your favorite magazine was in hand.

4. Talk yourself off the ledge. Often we talk ourselves into a frenzy. We dialogue in a way that escalates our anger. Instead, try and talk yourself down. "It will only be a few minutes. No big deal. Waiting is just a part of life."

5. Problem Solve. Lots of times we get some adrenaline racing through our veins when we are waiting. Why not use that rush for some good brain storming? You could start by brainstorming what you could do differently to prevent being in a long line. Then move on to other issues. Are you struggling with a parenting issue? A problem at work? Put your thinking cap on and use this time to problem solve solutions. If you can, keep a small notebook on hand. Imagine how much good could come out of your time with a little bit of focus.

Waiting doesn't have to be a nightmare if we decide to break free from the powerlessness we feel with just a little forethought and a bit of ingenuity. Try it. Go prepared. Look at waiting as an opportunity to problem solve or decompress or get organized and see how much easier your day can go with a few simple changes.

Phil's Notes:
A little more commentary on our recent trip to WV. On April 14, 2009,
Jami, Tim, Jennifer and Paul surprised us by taking us out to eat at
a local favorite restaurant called Cheddars/ in downtown Ashland
Kentucky. It was a very fine restaurant with a very varied menu from
soup to nuts and steak to fish and thus we had a wide variety to choose
from for our anniversary dinner. Phil choose the salmon dinner with baked
potatoes and diet coke and Jo Ann choose the lunch portion of salmon.
The service was prompt and food was just right and the company was
excellent. Jennifer and Paul treated us for the meal ( as our anniversary
gift) and we wish to thank them for their graciousness towards us.
Tim and Jami bought us a shadow box plaque with music accompaniment
for our anniversary and both gave us a very nice anniversary card.
Thanks Jami and Tim for the gift, card and for your thoughtulness
of arranging for this anniversary dinner. We love you all.

Phil's Testimony:
We had a good trip via plane home on Wesnesday but we had one negative
to report and that was that Phil lost his cell phone on the trip. He
promptly reported it to Baggage department in Rochester, NY airport
upon his return to Rochester and then he prayed about it asking the Lord
to get it back and safely in Phil's hand again. I later called my son
Tim and asked him to call the Huntington Airport to ask if they had
found it. On Friday, our son Tim called our cell phone number ( on lost
phone} and someone answered it in August Georgia. It was the baggage
department in Augusta Georgia airport and they said they had my cellphone
and would arrange to return it to me. Around 10;30 PM the Rochester airport
telephoned Phil at home and said they had my cellphone and I could pick
it up at the airport / which Phil did later that evening. Phil was
again reunited with his precious cellphone. Praise the Lord.
I was thinking of a scripture for the occcasion and remembered.
"If we ask anything (of the Father )faith believing/ he will do it".
I had prayed to The Father and asked / with my simple faith/
for the return of my cell phone and My Father answered my prayer.
Isn't God wonderful. Praise His Name.

Recently a guy in Paris nearly got away with stealing several paintings from the Louvre. However, after planning the crime, getting in and out past security, he was captured only 2 blocks away when his Econoline ran out of gas.

Scareware' scams trick searchers BBC

Peddlers of bogus anti-virus try to scare people into buying
Makers of fake anti-virus software are exploiting search engines to drive people to sites peddling 'scareware'.
Using popular and mis-spelled search terms, the criminals divert people to sites that are seeded with fake warnings about virus infections.
The pop-up warnings claim that a visitor's PC is riddled with malicious programmes and spyware.
Research suggests some criminals are making as much as $10,000 a day from fake security software.

Cashing in

Computer security firm Finjan carried out the research into the techniques sellers of 'scareware' use to get their fake software in front of web users.
"They are misleading people with evidence that their machine is infected with viruses and they are encouraging them to download and buy software that basically does nothing," said Yuval Ben-Itzhak, chief technology officer at Finjan.
Studies suggest that 'scareware' is catching on among some hi-tech criminals.
A report by the Anti-Phishing Working Group, released in March 2009, found 9,287 bogus anti-malware programmes in circulation in December 2008 - a rise of 225% since January 2008.

Scareware peddlers exploited the death of actress Natasha Richardson.

"The reason they are making so much money is the new techniques they are using, namely search engine optimisation," he said.
Mr Ben-Itzhak said a campaign to push scareware typically involves two groups of hi-tech criminals. One group compromises webpages and injects them with popular sea rch terms, the other sells the fake security software.
Some seed pages with popular keywords such as "Obama" but others use terms associated with recent events. Some tried to cash in on the death of Natasha Richardson by using words taken from news stories about the actress's death.
Using these popular terms mean the pages appear high up in results when people carry out a keyword search.
Anyone clicking on a booby-trapped page is then instantly re-directed to the site hosting the links to the fake security software.
Once they arrive, visitors are bombarded with pop-ups warning that their PC is infected. To clear up the infection, users are told, they must download and pay for anti-virus software which typically costs about $50 (£34).
The scareware sellers are exploiting top search terms
Through its research, Finjan got access to the web-based systems that one group of 'scareware' peddlers used to manage their search engine campaigns.
It20found that, over a 16-day period, more than 1.8m people were re-directed to the sites pushing the 'scareware'. Of those visiting the sites 7-12% installed the fake software and 1.79% paid $50 for it.
Some of the proceeds from this is handed back to those who inject the search terms into webpages, netting them about $10,800 (£7,467) a day for their work.
Mr Ben-Itzhak said people should be very wary of any pop-up window claiming to find evidence of an infection.
"It's impossible to scan your local disk without installing software," he said.
A spokesman for Google said it tried to combat efforts to trick its indexing system into crediting a page with more popularity than it deserved.
"In cases in which we feel that sites are attempting to manipulate rankings, we make adjustments to counterbalance and also discourage those efforts," said the spokesman in a statement.
"Certain actions such as cloaking - writing text in such a way that it can be seen by search engines but not by users - or setting up pages/links with the sole purpose of fooling search engines may result in removal from our index," he added.

Well our time in West Virginia has come to an end and we must bid adieu to

to this great state and our family here in Kenova. We say this sadness, and

Phil's Notes:
Yesterday was another event packed day for Phil and Jo Ann in West Virginia.
We got up early and attended both athe 8:30 and 11:00 Morning worship
services at Tim';s church ( Kenova United Methodist Church). Since it was
Easter many were decked out in their finest Easter outfits. In the first
service there were about 50 in attendence while the second service at
11:00 Am had full capacity ( 350 est). In the second service they
two choir perform. They had a bell choir and vocal choir. I have
seen bell choir on TV but I think it was the first time a have
seen a bell choir perform in perform and it was very nice. They have
both large bells and small bells ( to get the various sounds in song)
The bell choir members also wear gloves while performing and they
produce a very melodic tune, which I enjoyed very much. Pastor Lindsday
preached a great sermon on " What if Christ Resurrrection Never Happened"
They had some solo number and toward the end the voice choir sang
some verses from Handel's Messiah at which time the audience was instructed
to ring their own individual hand bells ( to celebrate the occassion of
Jesus's resurrection from the dead). It was a fitting end to a joyous
service celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior from the dead.
Phil and Jo Ann and company traveled to the Radisson Hotel in downtown
Huntington for Easter Dinner in the hotels ballrooms. It was a buffet
and they had an abundance of food including chicken, ham and roast beef,
potatoes, salads, and various desserts. It was great spread but not
the best place to be on a diet. We had a good time socializing with Tim
and Jami and her mother Jennifer and Paul ( Jami's step dad). Later
in the day we traveled to Nana's and Frans's home for Nana's home made
desserts ( creme puff desserts) Note Nana is Jami's grandmother and
Fran is her husband. We had pleasant time socilizing with them all
and enjoying their beautiful home. The weather also cooperated with
temps in high 50 to 60 ( est). We then went home to rest, but in
the evening checked out new custard place called Griffin's down
on Rte 60. It was crowded and reminded us of Abbotts Custard back
in Charlotte Beach in Rochster, NY. Well the adventure continues

Phil's Notes:
Well today we visited the hillybilly country/ Hot Dog Hillybillys to be
exact. What is Hot Dog Hillybillys you ask/ well check out my slideshow
above first and you get an idea of what I am talking about. Hot Dog
Hillybillys is a quircky restaurant built in side on the side of road in
country / at Le Sage West Virginia. Visiting the restaurant is like
entering the twilight zone. The entire exterior facade is composed of
every concievable antique you have thought of. They also have a tree
covered with various states license plates/ and an outdoor outhouse.
They also have two old buses connected to main building / that serve
as booth for part of the restaurant. The owners started it 20 years
or so/ and wanted it to reflect whimisical look at hillybilly life in
North America. Some of the features on the menu include the Hog Dog
Homewrecker ( $14.95) which include a hot dog piled hight with 14
additional ingredients. My brother in law Ken ordered it when he was
visiting several years ago. They also feature a 10 lb hamburger for
$24.95 ( my est). Now those are just the appetizers/
( Just kidding). And no Phil did not order either of these two items
The place is a local tourist destination and many were visiting
when we were there. Phil decided to buy the Hillybilly
Hot Dog T shirt/ so be sure to look for it on him when he returns to
New York. They have three locations in area. We would recommend it
highly if you ever in Huntington WV area.

West Virginia/ the adventure continues-----

Photo of local favorite ham place called Cam's Ham on First Street
that Phil ate lunch at today/ and had great ham sandwich and chili/ but no free refills/ Phil did not like that.

The motif seemed to NASCAR racing throughout restaurant
and this photo is of memorabilia on table in restaurant.

Last night Phil and Jo Ann got their dose of West Virginia Culture/ while he
went to regional High School Band Competition in nearby Ona West Virginia.
The kids were from various school including Buffalo WV. I did not know that WV had a Buffalo/ but they did. The students did excellent jobs and the auditorium was packed / and some parents?? were observed videotaping the performance. Phil especially enjoyed the trombones and march type music they played. He fell asleep in one number but not when the trombones were playing.

Phil's Notes:
Well blogger Phil and Jo Ann got on their magic carpet on Wednesday
of this week and headed south to Kenova WV, to visit their son Pastor Tim
and his new bride Jami and their dog Tilly Sue. They flew via US Airways
and had a great but uneventful trip ( which is good) and their son Tim
met us us at the airport for lunch. We rented a car at airport and got
a VW Jetta, which is a first for us, but it a very nice car. We just have
to get used to all gadgets and gear / on a different car ( the slow
learning curve issue / you know). We went to old favorite restaurant
in downtown Kenova ( which is decorated in old time soda shop fashion
and also has pharmacy there) for supper and met Jennifer ( Jami's mother)
there at supper), In the evening we attended the midweek Bible Study
at Tim;s church and Pastor Lindsay conducted the Bible Study. The church
folk always welcome us with open arms and make us feel right at home.
After church we got to socialize with Jami ( our daughter in law) and
her mother Jennifer / at Tim and Jami's home. We also got to know their
dog Tilly Sue and she demonstrated some of her tricks for us.
Today Phil went to the Y to do his routine and Jo Ann and Tim went to daily
Lenten services at 12:00 and had lunch there afterwards. Phil ate lunch
at Subways and then went to library / to write this note and where he is now.
